Wilderness On Wheels: A Journey to Accessibility

A question that inspired a vision to provide equal access to nature

The Founding of Wilderness On Wheels

Wilderness On Wheels is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and was founded by Roger West in 1986. Inspired by his outdoorsman father who became a wheelchair user in 1981, West couldn’t shake the question, “What does a disabled person do to enjoy the mountains?” He believed that everyone should be able to join their friends and family in the outdoors regardless of their disability. With the help of volunteers, Boy Scout troops, and local clubs, the WOW vision came to life.

Spend the day with us, or spend a few nights. Roger’s dream has blossomed into a nature retreat for all, built by thousands of dedicated volunteers over the years. Wilderness On Wheels can’t wait to welcome you and show you the powerful impact of equal access to nature. The peace and tranquility of the Colorado outdoors is accessible for everyone at Wilderness On Wheels. We are breaking down barriers in outdoor accessibility and providing access to nature for everyone. Please join us by visiting our beautiful mountain facility and consider volunteering.

When you visit Wilderness On Wheels, know that you are making a lasting impact towards supporting equal access to nature for everyone. We thank you for your support.
