Wilderness On Wheels Foundation was established as a not-for-profit corporation in March of 1986. Its mission: Stimulate the development of access for disabled persons to natural outdoor environments. The approach to the mission: Construct a model wilderness-access facility. First, to learn how and then to share that information with anyone, anywhere, and anytime. The goal for the model facility: Install an 8-foot wide boardwalk starting at 9,100 feet to the top of a 12,300 foot mountain. To date, over 116,000 hours have been invested in the project by some 3,500 volunteers. The boardwalk is just over a mile long. W.O.W. has provided advice and counsel to entities nationwide including the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service. As a result of stories about W.O.W. in magazines, newspapers, and on television, the W.O.W. mission is being addressed. In addition, over 30,000 visitors have been welcomed at the Colorado mountain facility. With no paid administrative staff, W.O.W. is supported entirely by donations.
